Trego wrestlers compete in Minneapolis

--Rubin Sherwood
Only two Trego wrestlers competed in the Minneapolis tournament on December 13.

Trego continues to struggle to have a full squad mostly because of injuries and sickness.

Trego finished last in the tournament with seven points. Eleven teams competed in the tournament. Top honors went to Minneapolis, first place with 129 points; Osborne, second place with 110 points; and Chapman, third place with 103 points.

Ethan Ghumm, 130 pounds, lost his first match, won his second, but lost the third match, which prevented him from placing.

Ethan James, 189 pounds, suffered the same song and dance as Ghumm: he finished with a 1-2 record as well.

The Trego wrestling squad next travels to a dual in Ellis to face Ellis and Hill City on December 18, and then they travel to a tournament in Hoisington on December 19.

The Trego boys wowed the crowd on December 16 with an impressive win over Hoxie. The win moves the boys’ record to 4-1.

The game started rather tight with both teams scoring 12 points in the first quarter. However, Trego pulled away inch by inch in the second quarter to head into the locker rooms with a 28-21 lead over the Indians.

In the second half, Trego continued to increase the lead to 13 before the end of the third quarter. Unable to mount a comeback in the fourth, Hoxie fell prey to the Golden Eagle’s offense, as the game ended, 53-27.

Scoring standouts for Trego included Spencer Hemmer, with 21 points, and Ryan Pfannenstiel, with 10 points. Hemmert also led the Golden Eagles in rebounds with eight, and steals with three.

Trego next plays the Smith Center on December 19 in the final game of the 2008 year at home.

The Lady Eagles met up against the 4-0 Hoxie Indians on December 16 and handed them their 5th win for the season.

The varsity girls began the game with energy as they stayed within two points, 19-21, during the first quarter.  However, Hoxie poured it on with a nine-point advantage during the second quarter, which created a 29-40 gap going into halftime.

Hoxie also ruled the second half, outscoring the Lady Eagles, by 11 in the third quarter and seven in the fourth quarter to win the game 47-76.  A contributing factor to the Lady Eagles’ loss was the double-digit scoring of four Hoxie players.

Leading scorers included Catie Riedel, totaling 13 points; and Olivia Fabrizius, totaling 10 for the game.

In the final game before Christmas Break, the Lady Eagles will meet up against the Smith Center Redmen on December 19.
