Trego Community High School hosted the Regional Wrestling on February 17 and 18, and John Kuhn and Tanner Lowry will be moving on to State competition.

Kuhn out-wrestled his competition, picking up three victories, 22 team points and a first place medal. Tanner Lowry also had three victories and earned 20 team points and a second place medal.

Kuhn, wrestling at 113, he received a bye in the quarterfinals. During the semifinals, Kuhn held strong and defeated Rhett Pospichal of Russell. Next, he pinned Bryan Valeta of Lakin for the first place match.

Kuhn commented on what it means for him to go to State this year compared to any other year.

Starting strong, Tanner Lowry pins Aden Vera of Hugoton in his first round. Lowry finished Regionals in second and will go to State.

“I feel like senior year’s state is different from previous years. It’s like this year is all or nothing; mostly because I won’t get another one.” Kuhn would also like to thank his teammates for training him every day; his coaches for always pushing him and Cameron Staples for coming every Tuesday and Thursday to help him better himself.

Lowry also had a great day. He picked up a win by pinning Aden Vera of Hugoton; he won by fall over Derek Boger of Cimarron, won by a decision over Carter Leibbrandt of Norton, but fell to Kirk Coomes of Phillipsburg for the second place medal.

Other team members who picked up wins were Brady Walt who pinned three opponents but fell to Avery Hawkins from Smith Center in the quarterfinals.  Hunter Folsom had two wins, and Jory Micik won by decision over Frank Mendoza of Tribune. Trevor DePriest and Blake Spencer also attended the meet.

State will be in Hays on February 24 and 25.
