Trego wrestlers have strong showing at Leoti

The TCHS wrestlers traveled to Wichita County to participate in the Round Robin tournament on February 3.  All the wrestlers placed, and Trego finished in third place with 102 team points.

Senior, John Kuhn earned the team 16 points placing first in his 120 lb. weight class. Kuhn quickly pinned his first two opponents, Alex McPhail of Cimarron and Tanner Randles of Sublette.  Kuhn won round four with a medical forfeit over Joe Ridder of Wichita County.  In Kuhn’s final match, he won by a 7-2 decision over Bryan Valeta of Lakin.

Also having a strong day, Tanner Lowry placed first in the 195 lb. weight class and earned the team 20 points. Lowry made a clean sweep of his opposition by pinning Camerson Blankenship of Sublette, Javier Hernandez of Wichita County, and Luin Norris of Saint Francis.

Hunter Folsom earned the team 14 points and placed second in the 182 lb. weight class. Folsom won by fall over Jamel Roberson of Sublette but lost by technical fall by Josh Seabolt from Cimarron.  Folsom came back strong in his final match and pinned Seth Hilt from Saint Francis. He finished the day with silver medal.

Several Trego wrestlers ended their day on the mat with third place medals. Senior,Trevor DePriest placed third and scored 11 team points. DePriest won in double overtime over Keaton Rudolph of Goodland.  During his second match, he lost in a 0-2 decision to Colby Gugelmeyer of Lakin.   He came back in the third round and won by decision over Xavier Chavarria of Sublette.  DePriest made it to the championship bracket but lost by a major decision to Johnney Perez of Lakin.   In the third place match, DePriest won by injury default over Colby Gugelmeyer of Lakin.

Junior, Brady Mattke placed third in the 285 lb. weight class and earned the team 15 points.  It was a day of falls for Mattke who won by fall over Zack Johnson of Brewster and Nick Claar of Cimarron. Mattke was pinned in his third and fourth rounds by Reyes Bustillos of Goodland and Jesse Hermosillo of Wichita County.  Mattke then pinned Nick Claar of Cimarron during his third place match.

Parker Opat also placed third and scored seven team points. In round one, he lost by fall toHagan Hoss of Goodland, but Opat won by fall over Stone Torres of Cimarron. In his next round, Opat fell to Hadley Panzer of Lakin.  In a strange turn of events, Opat won by injury default over Dillon Dunn of Trego Community.

Wrestling at 220, Dillon Dunn placed fourth.  He was off to a strong start and pinned Stone Torres of Cimarron.  However, he lost in a 0-7 decision to Hagan Hoss of Goodland and fell to Hadley Panzer of Lakin. 

Blake Spencer placed sixth and scored 9 team points.  Spencer lost by major decisionto Cody Baxter of Saint Francis.  He next pinned Colby Burkhart of Trego Community and Elian Valeta-Rios of Lakin. Spencer then pinned his final opponent Reese Garetson of Sublette.

Colby Burkhart also placed sixth.  In round one, he fell to Alec Smith of Cimarron, but he came back to pin Elian Valeta-Rios of Lakin.  He lost to teammate Blake Spencer but took a victory by pinning Reese Gareston of Sublette.  In his final round, Burkhart fell to Cody Baxter of St. Francis.
