Wrestlers have holiday success

Pinning his Hill City opponent, Parker Opat goes on to take second in the 285 weight class in Goodland on December 15.

On December 15, the Trego wrestlers traveled to Goodland for their yearly wrestling tournament.

Eli Reling had a fantastic pool, pinning Dominic Eddie of Ulysses, Jayden Vallejo of Goodland and Tristan Porter of Leoti Wichita County. Moving on to the placers bracket, Reling then pinned Wyatt Tubbs of Colby but fell to Dylan Weimer of Hoxie. Reling placed second and scored a total of 34.0 points for the team.

At 285, Parker Opat won his pool after pinning Isai Fernandez of Garden City in the first round. In the second round, Opat pinned Thayn Walt of Hill City. He went on to beat Connor Staab of TMP by decision. Opat continued his winning streak by pinning Simon Apodaca of Rocky Ford. Unfortunately, he fell to Hadley Panzer in the Championship Round. However, his strong performance gave him a second place medal and 31.0 team points.

Dillon Dunn also had in success in his bracket. The first was a bye, but in round two, he beat Nate Johnson of Ellis by technical fall. In the third round, he went on to pin Rene Martin of Hugoton, which moved him into the placing rounds. Dunn beat David Cruz of Hugoton by decision, but in his final match, he lost by majority decision to Tucker Branum of Colby.  Dunn placed second and scored a total of 24 team points.

Also having a successful day was Colby Burkhart, placing third in his pool in the 160 weight class. Burkhart beat Carter Cozaihr of Hugoton by decision; he then went on to beat Jayden Walker of Hill City by fall.  Burkhart continued his success by beating Isaiah Garcia of Rocky Ford by decision. Burkhart then moved on to the placing rounds where he fell by decision to Andrew Garcia of Garden City.  Determined to place third, Burkhart went on to defeat Nick Holms of Ulysses by fall. Burkhart scored a total of 25.0 team points.

Other participants who scored points for the team were Tanner Sells, 9 points; Sydney Boyle, 12 points; Gavin Garza, 6 points; and James Opat, 6.0 points.

The Eagles will wrestle against Phillipsburg at home on December 20.
