Mid-move, Colby Burkhart hears the signal that marks the end of the match and realizes he has won in a 4-1 decision over his opponent in his season opener on December 1.

The Eagle wrestlers had their first tournament on Saturday, December 1.  While the meet was originally to be in St. Francis, that tournament was canceled due to weather, so the team ended up at the Hoxie Invitational instead.  Despite the changes, the wrestlers got their season off to a strong start.

Parker Opat placed second at 285 with a record of 2-1 and scored 18 team points.  Opat pinned his first two opponents, Darien Dilka of Oakley and Declan Ryan of Colby.  Hadley Panzer of Laken won in a 3-0 decision over Opat in the first-place match, giving Opat a second-place medal to start the season.

Also wrestling well was Dillon Dunn who came home with a third-place medal at 220. Dunn had four matches and left with a 3-1 record.  In his first match, he pinned Lucas Patterson of Central Heights.  His second match was tougher and he lost by a decision to Ryan Junkermeier of Plainville.  Dunn went on to pin Tanner Dewey of Cimarron.  Facing David Cruz of Hugoton in the third-place match, Dunn won in sudden victory and added 14 points to the Eagles’ team score.

Senior TJ Hafliger had a busy day, wrestling five matches and ending with a 3-2 record.  Hafliger pinned Draxtin Hovis of Plainville in his first match but tell to Hagan Booi of Colby.  He won his next two matches, pinning Kaden Sekavec of Hoxie and winning in a 7-3 decision over Gavin Sproul of Norton.  However, Hafliger fell to Preston Nollette of Oakley in the third place match. Hafliger earned 10 points for the Eagle team.

Also adding to the Eagle score were Colby Burkhart with three points and Matthew Hafliger with four.

The Eagles will once again take to the mat in Ellis on December 7.
