Trego clashes with teams at league in the Tournament of Champions

The Western Kansas Tournament of Champions took place on Friday, January 26 at TCHS. There were 12 teams in total.  Three Trego wrestlers earned medals in their weight class.

In the 285 weight class, wrestler Brady Mattke placed second and scored 14.00 team points. In his first round, he received a bye, and in the second round, he won in a 5-0 decision over Connor Staab of TMP.  In the third round, he made short work of Jesse Hermosillo of Wichita County, pinning Hermosillo in 29 seconds. In the first place match, Mattke gave it his best but lost to Smith Center’s Avery Hawkins.

In the 220 weight class, Dillon Dunn placed third and scored 15.00 team points.  Dunn pinned his first opponent Jonah Smith of Plainville in quick time. Dunn also came out with a win in the second match by beating his opponent Juan Mancillas of Wichita County by a fall. Round three was a loss to Trayton Doyle of St. Francis in a 0-3 decision. Dunn moved to the third place match and took a win by pinning his opponent Darien Dilka of Oakley.

TJ Hafliger also earned a medal placing fourth. Hafliger had a strong start and won by an 8-2 decision over Dallas Gosselin of Norton and a 3-0 decision over Toby Woodworth of Ellis. Hafliger lost his third place match by injury default to Mitchel Topel of Smith Center.

Other wrestlers who scored at league were Dalton Hendrix, who placed fifth and scored 9.00 team points; Jessika Chapman, who placed eighth and scored 1.00 team point; Toby Lowry, who placed seventh and scored 4.00 team points; Colby Burkhart, who placed sixth and scored 3.00 team points; Jory Micek, who placed seventh and scored 2.00 team points; and Shaye Aumiller, who placed sixth and scored 3.00 team points.
