The fall weather did not deter the determination of the TCHS Girls’ tennis team.  The 321A Tennis Regionals were held in WaKeeney on Oct. 5-6 at the TCHS tennis courts.  The team placed 6th out of 11 teams with Adrian Dietz earning a 4th place medal and qualifying for State.

Number one singles player, Adrian Dietz was seeded 4th for the day beginning with a win against Brooke Steinert, Hoisington, 6-1, 6-0 in the first round.  In the second round, she defeated Kara Hays, Ellsworth, 6-3, 6-2, moving her on to the semi-finals and also qualifying for the state tournament.  Play continued on Saturday against Emily Ryan from Central Plains. Dietz lost to Ryan, last year’s state runner-up, 0-6, 0-6.  Playing for 3rd place, Dietz fell short to Kiara Sweat, Victoria, 3-6, 0-6, medalling 4th overall.

Doubles players, Hannah Kinderknecht and Tillie Malinowsky went 1-1 at the regional tournament.  Their first match was an easy defeat against Holloway/Wherry, Osborne, 9-0.  Kinderknecht’s strong serves and Malinowsky’s quick net play were not enough for a win against Sanchez/Haupt, Scott City, losing 2-6, 4-6.

Also playing doubles, Paige Post and Gracie Hickson, drew a tough seed matching up with the 2nd seed, Solida/Stapel, Phillipsburg, losing 0-6, 2-6 in their first round match which did not advance them further.

Starting one of the first feather bracket matches in the cold, damp weather, Cambrie Kemp played singles against Shyann Railsback, Norton, 1-9, which also did not advance her.

“I am proud of how hard all the girls played against tough competition.  We kept improving throughout the season, and I know some were sad to see it end,” Coach Lori Dietz commented.

The 321A Girls’ State Tennis tournament will be held in Pratt on Oct. 12-13.
