Despite the heat and wind, Trego sweeps home meet

Enduring the heat and wind, Willy Barney races to a third place finish at the home meet on September 14.

The Trego Eagles cross country team ran at the Big Creek Golf Course near WaKeeney on September 14, an extremely hot and windy day.

For the girls’ team, Helen Giefer came in first with a time of 21:37. Gaining a silver medal, Aleah Howard ran a 25:44. Coming in fourth with a time of 29:09, the newest member of the team, freshman Sydney Boyle, completed the race. The fourth member of the team to finish, Gracie Hickson ran a 31:32 and earned a ninth place medal. The girls’ team placed first with a compiled score of 14 points.

Aleah Howard commented on the events of the evening:

“I felt everyone on the team did a great job on keeping motivated and running their best despite the heat.” She also added, “Thanks to everyone for coming out to support.”

Smiling at the camaraderie of the other TCHS sports teams who came to the event to cheer on the cross country team, Aleah Howard is motivated as she runs by them.

On the topic of having an entire girls’ team this year, Howard stated: “Having a full girls’ team helps me stay motivated during the race because I’m no longer just running for myself.”

On the boys’ side, Wyndom Giefer came in second running a 19:58. The third place finisher, Willy Barney, sprinted into a 20:52. Bernard Giefer, who ran a 21:09, placed fourth.

Other boys running were Benjamin Anderson, 24:54; Andrew Mejia, 25:10; Cooper Desormiers, 27:15; and Evan Wilds, 32:19.

The boys’ team placed first with a team score of 18 points.

The Eagles will next compete at Hill City’s Prairie Trails Golf Course on September 21.
