Little Eagles cross country

Running with Allie Micek, Helen Giefer leads the way on the 1000 meter course at the Little Eagles Cross Country Camp on October 16 and 17.

By Sybil Giefer
On October 16 and 17, the cross country team invited the Little Eagles to come out and practice with them. Seven kids from WaKeeney and Ogallah attended the annual event.

The “marker run” took place on Monday, October 16, and cross country team members and the kids who came took markers and colored each other. Many people left with their shirts covered in team names and phrases that had craftily been applied to them while they were running. Several people were unaware of the words that covered their backs.

The next day, the team had fun with the “color run.” Parents and fellow team members threw powdered clothing dye at the kids and several cross country runners. After the run, a friendly game of freeze tag was organized.

At the end of the day, all of the kids got certificates of achievement and several pieces of candy. The cross country team sends a big “Thank you” to all of the kids who participated and the parents who helped out.

Trego cross country runs to Ogallah

Running against a spectacular background painted by Mother Nature,  Helen Giefer smiles to show her enjoyment of the run.

On Saturday, September 30, the Trego cross country team met at the swimming pool park to prepare for the arduous run to Ogallah.

The team headed out around 8:30. To warm up, the team jogged to the Catholic Church where they stopped to stretch. A mile after they left, they hit dirt. The weather was not the best as there were occasional gusts of wind.

After the athletes finished the almost nine mile run, the ones who supported the run offered rides back to town where they would enjoy some rewarding pizza.

Those who helped give encouragement as well as water were the following: Dawn Howard, Vicki Doxon, Bob Doxon, Sean Conness, Angela Wilds, and Seth Wilds.

Evan Wilds stated “Everyone felt accomplished at the end.”
