The 2016 Cross Country team is excited for the season and has high expectations for its team members.

Coach Gayle Pfannenstiel commented that she is looking forward to the cross country season with six boys and four girls going out for the sport.

Her goals for the season are to help runners achieve goals, do their best, and realize that as a whole they can do “anything they put their mind and heart into.” Pfannenstiel went on to say that she would like her team to be prepared for the meets both physically and mentally.

Sean Conness, the only senior out for the sport, spoke on the team’s expectations for the season.

He commented that the team’s strengths lie in being “able to continue running, competing, and basically climbing hills” even if it will hurt after the run or the race. However, he believes the team will need to “jell together” more for success throughout the season.

When asked what goals the team has for the season, Conness replied that the team hopes to send both individual runners and the boys’ team to State.  According to Conness, the team has prepared for the season by running a lot of hills and extra miles outside of practice.  The team has “overall talent, heart, and drive to push each other continuously,” said Conness.

Cross country team “runs smart” on Ogallah run

The Trego cross country team gathered together for their annual run to Ogallah on October 1.

The team started their run at the WaKeeney Swimming Pool Park and took Old Highway 40 to Schreiner’s old fuel station in Ogallah. The run was approximately 8.5 miles.

Supporting the team on their run were Elaine and Ian  Conness, Wyndom Giefer, Charlene Anderson, Angela Wilds, Dawn and Hardy Howard, Tina and Jason Hickson, Vicki and Robert Doxon, and Jeff Rhoden and son, JT.

After the run, everybody gathered together at Pizza Hut to celebrate.

A senior member of the team, Sean Conness, has made the run three times.

“It is important to stay relaxed in order to make such a long run,” commented Conness.  “Control your breathing and don’t start out too fast. You have to run smart,” he concluded.
