Regional tennis sends Trego to State

On May 4, Trego tennis traveled to Kiowa for Regional tennis. Number one doubles players, Leyton Brock and Austin Kinderknecht, placed second and earned their way to state. Number one singles player, Branden Swart, placed fourth and also made it to state. The team placed third and tied with Colby.

Number one doubles players, Leyton Brock and Austin Kinderknecht had a bye their first match. They won their second match against Unruh/Jones of Meade, 7-5,6-3, qualifying for state. They won their third match against Cupp/Irwin of Scott City, 4-6,7-5,6-2. They fell to their final match of the day against Clawson/Clawson of Meade, 0-6, 2-6.

Number one singles player, Branden Swart had a bye his first match. He won his first match against Hutfles of Colby, 6-1,6-4, earning him a spot at state. He fell to his last two opponents Evans, 0-6,0-6, and Cupp, 0-6,4-6.

Number two doubles players, Jory Micek and Dylan Johnson placed in the top eight. They won their first match against Banks/Rathgeber of Kiowa-South Barber, 0-6,6-2,10-5. They fell to their last two opponents, Lee/Craft, 0-6,4-6, and Haire/Wright, 3-6,6-1,4-6.

Number two singles player, Dylan Pfiefer, lost his first match of the day against Iribas of Meade, 3-6,2-6.

Coach Lori Dietz commented on the day, “After starting with surprisingly high seeds in the bracket, the boys fought with determination and played their best matches of all season.”

State tennis will be May 11-12 in Wichita.
